Managing Escalating Behavior
                        Course Description
School systems around the country have long realized the value of training staff in the proper use of physical intervention strategies.  Many state and local school districts require most staff to attend similar training's as part of their ongoing professional development. The course: 
Managing Escalating Behavior :  will offer a wide range of strategies for staff that are not required to go hands on will find helpful when managing challenging behaviors, including aggression.

The course as outlined below will be taught in four separate, but contiguous, modules. Each module builds on the previous one, which means, participants will not be allowed to skip modules. All modules are part of a total behavior intervention concept and must be taken sequentially. Each module is approximately 1 hour in length.

As part of the districts commitment to continuity of service, the following information is an outline of the course mentioned above. 

Title: Managing Escalating Behavior

Module 1
  • Prevention Strategies: This module will concentrate on pro-active strategies parents can take to manage problematic behaviors before they have a chance to escalate.

Module 2
  • De-escalation Techniques: De-escalation concepts will be taught from the ideal of what can we, staff, do differently to de-escalate ourselves and thus, help our student's to de-escalate themselves.

Module 3
  • Verbal diffusion: Topics discussed during this module will enable staff to be more aware of how their choice of language can either escalate or de-escalate a difficult/challenging situation.

Module 4
  • Personal Safety: Participants will learn basic personal safety strategies to help increase staff's self-confidence when confronted with the physically aggressive child.
